What Happens in Therapy?

I will meet with you and your child for an introductory meeting to discuss the current issues your child is facing and how I can help. In the following sessions with your child we will:

  • Talk

  • Do activities

  • Practice new skills

  • Solve problems

Talk.
Talking is a healthy way to express feelings. When kids put feelings into words instead of actions, they can act their best. When someone listens and knows how they feel, kids are more ready to learn.

Do activities.
Therapists use activities to teach about feelings and coping skills. They may have kids draw or play as a way to learn. They may teach mindfulness and calm breathing as a way to lower stress.

Practice new skills.
Therapists help kids practice what they learn. They might play games where kids need to wait their turn, use self-control, be patient, follow directions, listen, share, try again, or deal with losing.

Solve problems.
With older kids and teens, therapists ask how problems affect them at home, at school. They talk over how to solve these problems.

Young Adults:

Tweens, adolescents, teenagers, young adults – no matter what you call them, we can agree that these years are an essential period of development. Experts suggest that mental health struggles are not uncommon during these years. Teens often are struggling with peer pressure, body image, self-esteem, anxiety, depression or bullying.

*A mental health professional will likely want to interview you and your teen to understand the current issue better. Then, sessions may include your teen only, or the therapist may wish you or other family members to attend. Online therapy is another treatment option that can also be effective for teens.

*Your teen may be assigned "homework" to do outside of their therapy sessions, which may involve practicing many of the skills they are working on during therapy.
